BFESS - Biography
 |
Denise has worked as a midwife since 1985 and qualified as a lactation consultant in 1999. She has had varied experience in both hospital and community settings, and has always been keen to support other mothers with concerns and issues encountered while breastfeeding.
For seven years she held the specialist role of Infant Feeding Advisor at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. This role involves supporting families where babies are born preterm or are ill or need to be in hospital for a variety of reasons. She has experience in supporting mothers feeding multiples, usually twins and triplets. Her experience also includes however situations where the feeding just needs a helping hand in the first few days until everyone gains confidence and strategies to tackle issues are developed.
Within her work in the NHS she has trained staff coming into contact with breastfeeding families and developed policies and guidelines around infant feeding. She is familiar with and supportive of the work of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative.
She has taught on Infant Feeding for the University of Nottingham’s medical, nursing and midwifery students, and on the post registration course DM3351.
In January 2005 she had an article published in the British Journal of Midwifery entitled “Breastfeeding, Co-sleeping and the prevention of SIDS”. This has now been rewritten as a chapter in "Challenges for Midwives" 2nd Edition.
She also has experience of the Voluntary Sector, being a founding member of the Nottingham Pregnancy Crisis Centre charity.
She is wife to Nigel and mum to Zoe and Ellie.
In her spare time she enjoys dancing, singing, walking up hills, and cooking, not all at the same time!
